WEDAP is a social responsibility initiative promoted, since 1986, by a rural farm Masseria Coppola, located in the countryside of Crispiano TA.
The performed activities
The research performed by WEDAP was prized as finalist in the global EBL Empowering a Billon Lives competition, organized by the IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. IEEE is the largest largest technical-scientific organization in the world that brings together over four hundred thousand experts in electrical engineering.
In March 2023, Antonio Perrone is was a guest of the IEEE, in Orlando, Florida, for the final phase of the competition. IEEE - in addition to the stay in Orlando - financed part of the field tests and also organized crowdfunding for the project.
The work here described here was awarded, in Bari, in June 2023, on the occasion of the Apulian Award organized by Confindustria and CNR, the Italian National Council of the Researches.
In March 2024, Antonio Perrone gave a talk at the WORLD DRAFT CATTLE SYMPOSIUM, organized by the Lauresham Open-Air Laboratory for Experimental Archeology (UNESCO World Heritage Site Lorsch Abbey). The 112∘ and the 115∘ edition of the Annual Conference organized by AEIT - Italian Federation of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications have welcomed two reports by Antonio Perrone on the subject, both of which can be consulted in the electronic archive of the IEEE: IEEExplore.
The keynote address of the 12th World Buffalo Congress, Istanbul 18-20 September 2019, was presented by Antonio Perrone together with Antonio Borghese, general secretary of the International Buffalo Federation. The report set out the positive implications of animal traction for the achievement of the objectives set by the UN Millennium Development Goals.
In 2019 in Rimini, in Ecomondo Fair, WEDAP received a plaque on the occasion of the Sustainable Development Award assigned every year by the Foundation for Sustainable Development. In fact it is was considered one of the top 10 Italian companies in the Renewable Energy sector.
WEDAP has developed several prototypes over the years, the first of which in 1987, of innovative animal-driven pumps. There is extensive audiovisual documentation of some of them. Some prototypes can be visited at the Masseria Coppola in the countryside of Crispiano TA.
The equipment are patented in Italy with the number 0001397958/2013. The invention had in fact passed the joint examination of the European Patent Office and the Patent and Trademark Office of the Ministry of Economic Activities.
Similarly, WIPO, the World Intellectual Patent Organization concluded positively - according to the PCT procedure - the evaluation of the discovery. To this was attributed the application number PCT/IT2011/000030 available on the Patentscope website.
Following an agreement signed in March 2017, the Department of Agriculture, Rural and Environmental Development of the Puglia Region has granted as loan two donkeys of Martina Franca x Catalana, owned by of the region. The two animals were raised at Masseria Russoli, owned by of the Region in the Crispiano countryside.
The Asian Buffalo Congress 2015 (Istanbul 21-25 April 2015) hosted a poster THE DRAUGHT ANIMAL POWER: A DEVELOPMENT TOOL NO SO DEVELOPED
In June 18, 2014 The Workshop “Animal traction: an underdeveloped development tool” was organised by CETAMB, "CeTAmb LAB - Research laboratory on appropriate technologies for environmental management in countries with limited resources", a center of the University of Brescia directed by prof. Carlo Collivignarelli. This was a seminar organized at the said university center to discuss the results of the work carried out by WEDAP up to that time.
The work was presented on 19 June 2014 at the training course on the zootechnical management of buffalo farms - organized by International Buffalo Federation in Latina - attended by 27 professionals from twelve countries on three continents.
The Polytechnic of Bari participated, as part of this initiative, in the Innovative Machines competition announced by ENAMA, the National Agency for Agricultural Mechanization, in 2013, achieving a flattering evaluation
The Research Unit for Agricultural Mechanization of the CRA Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, in July 2011 tested one of the prototypes developed
FAO hosted a stand for the presentation of the work in progress in Sirte, Libya in 2008 on the occasion of the Intergovernmental Conference on water and energy for agriculture in Africa
The initiative is was partially financed by both the Banca di Credito Cooperativo dei Castelli Romani and the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di San Marzano di San Giuseppe
ICCREA, on the initiative of the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Taranto, presented at EXPO 2015, in the Cascina Triulza stand, a video created as part of the initiative called Animal traction: one poorly developed development tool.

Skills
The initiative makes use of, among others, the skills of Antonio Perrone. In the 1980s Antonio Perrone, with a study grant from the National Research Council, was a Visiting Scholar at New York University. On that occasion he explored the methodologies of technology transfer in developing countries.
He obtained two annual Master's degrees in science, technology and innovation at the Higher School of Public Administration in Rome and in Bologna.
He followed a two-year, post-university course in socio-economic subjects financed by the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno in the 1970s

Graduated in law, he speaks fluent English and French.
From 2000 to his retirement in 2014, he was a director at the Ministry of the Environment in Rome where, among other things, he directed the Research Division of the Sustainable Development Service.
From 1986 to 2000 he was was an officer of the same Ministry.
From 1975 to 1986 he was was engaged in ENI Group and in particular, with reference to renewable energy, he worked at Pragma S.P.A., a company of the said Group. Pragma at the time was was, in Italy, the first manufacturer of photovoltaic modules and systems.
He has held seminars at the Polytechnic of Bari and universities of Brescia and Viterbo. He has written technical articles in specialized magazines and newspapers including L'Osservatore Romano, La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno and L'Opinione.
He has carried out work missions in 15 countries on four continents.
He has acquired experience in handling animals on his own farm
He is member of the national council of the National Federation of Farmers Entrepreneurs of Confagricoltura.
